Alex Flower is a organist, saxophonist and teacher based in London. He is the Organist at St. George’s Cathedral Southwark, holds a number of teaching positions in London, and maintains a freelance career across musical genres.
Hailing from Gosport, Hampshire, Alex’s musical training began with local teachers - including an organ scholarship at Holy Trinity, Gosport. He also spent a few years studying jazz at Guildhall School of Music and Drama’s Junior Department. Following this, he became the organ scholar at Worcester College Oxford, and graduated in 2021 with a First Class music degree. He subsequently moved to begin a music career in London, and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists. During this time, he was the organ scholar at St Mary’s Bourne Street, and then organist of St Cyprian’s Clarence Gate. Further postgraduate study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama yielded a Master of Performance with Distinction in Jazz Saxophone.
At St George’s Cathedral, Southwark, Alex accompanies the weekly schedule of services and also assists in the training of the choristers and cathedral consort. He also supervises the development of the cathedral organ scholar, and has recently hosted an introductory afternoon workshop and a concert for young organists in conjunction with the RCO’s Play the Organ Year . Recent highlights have included the Easter Sunday BBC Songs of Praise Broadcast 2025, and playing for various recordings with the different cathedral choirs - available on Spotify and Youtube.
Alex is in demand as a freelancer across a number of different fields. As a saxophonist, he has worked in jazz, pop, classical and electronic genres. He regularly plays within jazz ensembles or alongside choirs, and has also spent some time playing saxophone, clarinet and flute in musical theatre pits around London - most recently as a deputy on Guys and Dolls at the Bridge Theatre. Alex is a frequent collaborator with emerging DJ and producer Michael Diamond, who forges a sound world between jazz and electronic music; Alex’s saxophone playing has featured on 4 of his releases to date, and many more live events. As an accordionist, Alex appears with the gypsy jazz quartet Fann Street Hot Club, who appear at various public and private events. As organist, he is in demand with choral societies as accompanist and continuo player, and can often be seen as a solo recitalist around London and further afield.
Alex is also an experienced music teacher, working at St Paul’s School, King’s College School Wimbledon and Dulwich College as organ teacher, and at St Augustine’s Priory as a saxophone and clarinet teacher.
